The trust is a UK based registered charity that exists to promote herbal medicine in all its forms. We fund diverse projects and deliver education from home herbalism to full professional training. The trustees who run the charity are an eclectic and talented group of people united by their love of plants and their respect for herbal medicine.

The Bristol Fungarium planted it's mycelial roots from humble beginnings with many small hands at work. As an organic farmer and former forest school leader, founder, Tom Baxter spent two years initiating "The Growing Up Project" which welcomed children from 9 months to 19 years into an organic farm just outside Bristol, encouraging them to reconnect with nature and learn what it means to work with the land.

In April 2016, The National Institute of Medical Herbalists Education Fund (now the Herbal Medicine Trust), at the instigation of Paul Hambly, FNIMH (Chair of the Fund) launched a new educational initiative, under the name Heartwood and established by Dr. Nic Rowley, with the aim of producing a suite of blended learning courses and programmes as part of its mission to promote excellence in herbal medicine education. Heartwood Education is currently led by Guy Waddell, Director of Studies.
The project is currently managed by Lisa Smith (General Manager), Guy Waddell PhD MNIMH (Director of Studies), Hananja Brice-Ytsma MSc FNIMH (Clinical Director), and Veda West MSc (Course Leader for the Professional Course).

Junior Herbalist Club was created and developed by Medical Herbalist and Naturopath Mel Hornby and has been delivering herbal education to children since 2014. In 2021 Mel was awarded The Christopher Hedley Memorial Award for Significant Contribution to Herbal Medicine in recognition of her development of the JHC education program.

Lincoln College offers the BSc (Hons) Clinical Herbalism degree programme provides a comprehensive education and training in the principles and practice of clinical herbalism.
This incorporates the ‘energetic’ understanding of the cause of illness and the therapeutic actions of medicinal plants as well as the orthodox disciplines of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathophysiology and Nutrition. It is integrative in approach, linking traditional herbal medicine with modern science and holism.
Our teaching methods include a rich mixture of theoretical study, reflection, the use of intuition and practical experience including professional practice in our on-site Complementary Medicine Clinic. Our aim is to ensure that our graduates become competent and confident practitioners of clinical herbalism.
The course is delivered by block learning, which means that the attendance requirements for the academic modules are met through eight full three day weekends per year, plus attendance at the Complementary Medicine Clinic for clinical training. It is expected that students complete between 20 and 30 hours of additional independent study per week.
My work follows the seasons of the year, gathering wild plants from my local landscape, pressing them into clay and creating naturally inspired tableware with organic forms and gentle curves. Mainly with the focus of plants that would have been and still are to this day used as medicine.
