Becoming a Member

We have operated a voluntary register for professional medical herbalists since 1864 and are recognised for our high professional standards.

Our Full Members have completed degree-level qualifications in herbal medicine, or an equivalent qualification. We maintain high standards of education and professional practice in herbal medicine and work to raise the professional standing of medical herbalists.

Students graduating from one of our accredited courses are eligible to apply directly for Full Membership.

 

If you have graduated from an accredited programme of Western Herbal Medicine, or have been a member in the past, please email us with details of your education or previous membership and we will arrange this for you.

For anyone who has graduated from non accredited schools we offer an Individual Application.

There are no application fees for graduates from accredited programmes.

Application and assessment fees for applicants through the Individual Application Scheme may apply.

New members who have completed an accredited programme within the last 2 years are granted discounted fees of 40% each year for the the first year 2 years of membership

In addition to membership fees, Institute members must take out indemnity insurance through the block insurance scheme (approximately £60 per year for a £6,000,000 cover) – or demonstrate equivalent cover.
