An Introduction to TCM theory for Western Medical Herbalists

As a western herbalist and TCM practitioner Steve is uniquely placed to present this ancient knowledge in a clear, de-mystified, practical way to western herbalists so you can help your patients even more.

Week 1: Introduction – Tao, Yin and Yang, Qi and Blood, 5 Elements, 8 Principles, Zang fu.

Week 2: Internal organs – Zang fu – physiology and common pathology 

Week 3: Causes of disease. Internal / external. Shang han lun – The Six stages. Wen bing – The Four levels. Latent heat.

Week 4: Internal organs – Zang fu pathology, how Chinese herbal medicine is structured and works. Syntax / grammar.

Week 5: Popular Chinese herbs. Understanding formulas. Tying it all together.


The Foundations of Chinese Medicine” by Giovanni Maciocia is essential back ground reading / course text book.

Steve’s Bio:

Steve has been practising since 1985.Originally using western herbal medicine (Phytotherapy) and Homeopathy, he became interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and studied Chinese herbal medicine from the late 1980’s. He went to the University hospital in Guangzhou Peoples Republic of China in 1992, 1993, 1995, and 2007 to further his studies in herbal medicine and diet therapy, and to learn acupuncture, tui na massage and qi gong. As well as his private practices in the 1990’s Steve worked for the NHS at the Gateway Clinic specialising in the treatment of HIV / AIDS and Hepatitis C with TCM. From 2000- 2017 he was head of complementary medicine at the Third Space Medicine which was London’s leading integrated medical centre. He is a past President of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and was named as one of the top 20 Health Gurus in the country by the Daily Telegraph. His first book “Health in theory and practice – circling the square” was published last year. In late March 2020 he participated in a global discussion with Dr’s and researchers in Wu Han for China Global TV Network and is on the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicines expert COVID-19 panel.
