Accessing the library

Members Only

When the Institute was first incorporated back in the 19th Century, it was stated one of the ways it should support it's object to "...promote and encourage the study and practice...of the art and science of Medical Herbalism" was to "...maintain, extend and improve a library". We have held a library for well over 100 years, and we are delighted that as part of its extension and improvement, we are now able to make it much easier for our members to access it.

The library has been through an extensive review process over the last two years, with the collection refined and a considerable number of additional books added. It has been a considerable effort, with the office team, council members and our amazing library volunteer Ruth Baker helping us to end up with a fantastic resource. We are also hugely grateful to our Friends at Aeon Books for supplying us with a copy of every title they publish from a past or present member, helping to further develop the collection.

As well as extending and improving the quality of the library itself, we have also extended and improved access to it, with the over 400 books now in an easy to use, searchable online catalogue. Many of the books are available to borrow at no cost, and those that are not able to be loaned are all available to visit at our head office in Exeter.

This really is a fantastic resource, and we look forward to it being used to support you whether you are just starting out on your herbal training, or because your thirst for knowledge has continued throughout your life.
