Kerry Elizabeth Hackett
March 23, 1957 - December 31, 2023

Peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, on December 31 st , of cancer but unexpectedly. Beloved wife of Alan Buchkowski.

Kerry Hackett qualified as a Member of the National Institute in 2001 and practised in Ontario, Canada. We came to know each other when Kerry joined the MSc Herbal Medicine at the University of Central Lancashire more than 12 years ago – Kerry was the most thorough student that I ever met and we continued to meet online from time to time, to talk research.

Kerry continued with her research in Shaker medical practice and had just completed her dissertation for her Professional Doctorate in Health. Her supervisor Graeme Tobyn wrote: “Kerry was such a dedicated, assiduous student and her revised monograph on Shaker medicine deserves to be published in honour of its author. That she will not be seeing this through herself is such a loss.”

Kerry’s attention to detail meant that she could make connections and develop insights into the way that Shakers experienced herbal and medical care and destroy some myths in the process.

Kerry was an assiduous and caring practitioner – continuing to practise and to make herbal medicines - alongside her studying- and presenting at Shaker conferences. Like many herbalists, she had her own backstory - as a costume and set designer and brought this artistry to her garden – growing herbs and vegetables – bottling fruit - making herbal medicines -where roses contend with cold winters and hot summers.

So much passes away with one person, tangible in her research which will be shared through publication, yet intangible in the care and energy that Kerry brought to every aspect of life.
