Under current legislation issued by HM Government, our guidance for herbal practitioners working in areas in England which fall under Tiers 1, 2 & 3 is that they are presently permitted to undertake face-to-face consultations with patients where these are judged to be appropriate, and providing that a proper COVID-19 risk assessment has been done and COVID safety measures are in place and being correctly implemented.

The recent introduction of additional Tier 4 restrictions for many areas of England has added some new restrictions, including the closure of ‘personal care’ services in these areas.

Section 17(o) of The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020 states that in Tier 4 areas:

dental services, opticians, audiology services, chiropody, chiropractors, osteopaths and other medical or health services, including services relating to mental health” may remain open.

It is our view that the work of herbal practitioners should be regarded as part of ‘health services’ and we are therefore suggesting that, provided full COVID safety procedures are observed, members may continue to provide face-to-face consultations where they feel that this is necessary for the healthcare needs of individual patients.

This means that herbal practitioners may continue to see their patients in person across all four existing Tiers documented in the current legislation if they need to.

In line with official guidance we would still suggest that you should continue to work from home wherever possible and to offer remote consultations where, in your professional judgement, this provides a more appropriate option for your patient.

As the situation continues to change rapidly and official guidance has again been introduced at short notice, we are stressing our usual advice to refer back frequently to any national and local guidance that may apply to your particular location. Additional guidance for the other devolved nations of the UK will be issued shortly.

Our very best wishes to all of our members at this difficult time. We will continue to provide support and guidance for you as often as we can.
